Building Our Best Future
A meeting was held to talk about our future.
Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m.
The objective was to encourage people affiliated with St. Andrew's to share their ideas about how best the church can supporting you, stay connected and relevant to you, your children and grandchildren.
People shared ideas about their vision for all of us in the future. To help people think about the future everyone was provided with the following information derived over the last couple of years during development of the Pastoral Charge Strategic Plan and St. Andrew’s Every Family Visit.
Data: There is a continuum of people associated with our Pastoral Charge. All of the families along this continuum support the church financially. At opposite ends of the continuum however families have much different perspectives and expectations about what they want and need from the church. This continuum is depicted in the figure below.

In summary, people want:
- the church and building to be here for the long run;
- the building to be used more extensively for our own purposes as well as for the community;
- information about our finances to help them understand where our money comes from and what it is used for; and
- a focus on children and young people.
- Our top givers provide a disproportional amount of our overall revenue.
- As few as 10 contributors provide as much as 40% of our annual givings.
- In most cases these are elderly contributors and their gifts will not easily be replaced.
- Capital and operating costs are increasing; at times significantly.
- Now, more people do not attend yet contribute, than do attend and contribute.
- Retirees, (our primary volunteers and financial supporters), especially after 80 leave our community (through residential moves or death).
- Church participation has declined and the increasing ages of participants suggest an accelerated decline.

We Tried Something Different
February 4, 2018
After a hearty breakfast provided by the Special Events Committee with help from and Bill Duncan and Jack Fulton, Jeff led us through an experimental, participatory service. It was all about finding and using our inner strength. Jeff established situations and let us talk with our neigbours about how we might deal with them. It was educational, thought-provoking and fun.
It's always good to try something new!

The much anticipated annual service at Fulton's was another resounding success. People enjoyed service, a pancake brunch and activities in the sugar bush. Once the service and brunch was over families enjoyed outdoor fun in the Sugar Bush.

"Taste of Nova Scotia" says that, "At its essence a kitchen party features good food, great music, and conversation." We had these key ingredients in ample measure on February 16 at our own "Beat the Freeze - Kitchen Party".
The evening began with a delicious ham and bean supper made lovingly by members of the Special Events Committee - very yummy as always! After lots of food and conversation we settled in to enjoy the show. Our version of a kitchen party isn't just about music - it's about entertainment. We had young folks and old, singing and playing, some shenanigans from our resident ham, a monologue, a dramatization and poems. It's impossible to think of anything that was missed.
We extend heartfelt thanks to all of the following performers for their time, talent and good humour.
Allan Bradley (piano)
Daniel Grenier (guitar) with Shirleen Duncan (vocals) and Laurie Boon (vocals)
Doug Russell (guitar & vocals) & Marty Russell (bass guitar)
Noah and Analeisa Reid (vocals)
Danya Hakeem (vocals) and Barb Armstrong (piano)
Zade Hakeem (on being left handed)
David Sale (The Great Composter)
Grace Cavanagh (guitar & vocals)
Jeff de Jong (poem recitations)
And, to members of the Special Events Committee for the inspiration for this event (the third annual), the hard work to make it happen and their on going dedication to St. Andrew's.

Our Bake Table was a great fundraiser this year bringing in $500. Supporters baked and made homemade pies, buns, tea biscuits, cookies, loaf cakes, cupcakes, muffins, cinnamon rolls, squares and tarts. And, Shirleen baked all through the afternoon so the wonderful aromas would entice visitors to buy a snack.

Women's Spiritual Spring Retreat
Galilee Centre, Arnprior
April 8 and 9, 2018
2 pm Sunday - 4 pm Monday
Theme
Cultivating Body/Mind/Spirit Wellness through Stillness
Exploring Meditation as a Daily Holistic Practice
The retreat was such a success another retreat has been booked for
September 2018.
Testimonials from two attendees.
"Our Journey With Your Spirit Retreat was amazing ... very inspiring & enlightening. We learned about and practiced silence, meditation, mindfulness, and gratitude. We walked a healing labyrinth and had many discussions on what we can use daily for our self-care to create inner stillness and peace in our busy lives. We were encouraged to journal our thoughts throughout the retreat which I found very powerful. Judith was a terrific facilitator. The Galilee Centre was a perfect venue with stunning views of the Ottawa River. The Galilee staff provided wonderful, delicious and nutritious meals & snacks. It was great to share this retreat with a wonderful group of women." ...Joan Gillan
"I feel profoundly touched by the experience of this retreat. It has enabled a sense of balance and calm and when the noise of daily life tries to crowd into my mind and emotions, the wisdom and peaceful energy of the guided meditations - and the insights gained through these - weave gentle tendrils of quiet that dispel any dark threads of anxiety. Galilee House is the perfect setting for retreats of this nature. The interior of the building seems infused with a spirit of calm. There are areas to 'get away' and contemplate in silence and the grounds are part of a beautiful natural setting. I thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from this experience."
...Cheryl Morris-Putman
The retreat offered an introduction to a variety of types of meditation that can be integrated within your particular lifestyle - each with the objective of increasing holistic awareness of the self in relation to all else as we look for balance within the busyness or the slowing down of life - and the desire to create inner stillness and peace.
Retreat activities took place both outdoors and indoors on the Galilee property. The use of silence as a powerful tool in developing inner peace was used throughout the agenda. No previous experience was necessary.
This retreat was led by Judith Campbell, local author and wellness retreat facilitator.
The cost of the retreat included private sleeping accommodation, meals and snacks, conference room and facilitator fee. Space was limited to twelve participants.

At service on Sunday, May 27, 2018 the Gillan and Stanton cousins were Confirmed by Reverend Jeff de Jonge. It was wonderful to see these youngsters, who we have watched grow into accomplished, responsible and caring young people, receive the Blessing and Commissioning.
Jeff gave a brief summary of their discussions during Confirmation classes and then offered the following Blessing and Commissioning individually to each:
By the gift of your Spirit, God, confirm and strengthen <name> so that she/he may live out her/his trust in you through the Church, throughout her/his life.
<Name> may you always be aware that the spirit of the Divine is with you always, no matter what. Practice justice, live kindness, relate to others in love and maintain hope and do so in a spirit of humility and with a conscientiousness that is yet lighthearted. May it be so.

All About Christmas in July 2018
SHIFTING CHRISTMAS DONATIONS TO JULY
Helping the Hunger Stop to provide for clients in the lean summer months
SHIFTING CHRISTMAS DONATIONS TO JULY
Helping the Hunger Stop to provide for clients in the lean summer months
Many of us give generously to the Food Bank at Christmas time. Sometimes that leaves the shelves pretty bare in the middle of the year. Christmas in July was designed to address this gap and it was a hugely successful first year.
"The 12 Days of Christmas in July” campaign kicked off on Canada Day and wrapped up on Saturday July 14, 2018. Intended to fill the warehouse for the summer it was The Hunger Stop’s hope that individuals and groups who donate so generously at Christmas would consider shifting part of their annual donations to help them provide for clients during their leanest months.
The Hunger Stop donors came through in a big way.
The total campaign contributions were:
4,230 lbs. of food and $4,119
Included in these numbers are Pakenham's contributions. Through the hard work of the Pakenham Civitan (with a little assistance from St. Andrew's) we gathered:
199 lbs. of food and $1,236.50

There were a number of activities contributing the the spirit of the campaign. Santa saw kids at Riverside Park in CP, July 1, 1:00-3:00 pm.
and the mayors were at Mitchell’s and Patrice’s Independent Grocers on Saturday July 7, 2018, for a little friendly competition. At the mayoral challenge food drive (Shaun McLaughlin at Patrice's vs Louis Antonakos at Mitchell's) our communities really showed their generosity by donating $1,259 and 1,271 lbs. of food! Team Patrice's Independent Grocer & Mayor Shaun rounded up $938 and 790 lbs. and Team Mitchell's Your Independent Grocer & Mayor Louis bringing in a very respectable $321 and 481 lbs. A big thank you to Zach from Carleton Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning Ltd. for delivering the stash to the warehouse.

Church Camp
Monday, August 20 to Friday, August 24, 2018
Monday, August 20 to Friday, August 24, 2018
Twenty-five children from St. Andrew’s, Zion, St. John’s Anglican and the community enjoyed another successful ecumenical church camp at St. Andrew’s.
Ten adult leaders including some special visitors taught the children about insects, bees, plants and animals. Activities, and there were a lot of them, included a scavenger hunt on the railway trail, frog races at the fairground and our own Olympic sports competition - all in celebration of God’s wonderful world.
We started camp on Monday with a story about “Itchy Bear” who meets old and new friends as he looks for rocks and trees to scratch on. We divided into four teams with Bear and his friends Mole, Owl and Squirrel as mascots. These four teams added points to their score throughout the week through soccer, relay games, the scavenger hunt and frog races. At our Friday end-of-camp party we played games, enjoyed treats, and presented a prize to the winning team - the moles!
The leader team is looking forward to planning next summer’s camp.
For more information about church camp speak to Bronwen at 613-256-0889.

The Festival of Small Halls (FOSH) made its third appearance at St. Andrew's in Pakenham on September 14, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.
A packed, enthusiastic crowd welcomed Kelly Sloan and Stephen Fearing to its small hall stage for a memorable evening of live music.
Kelly, an Almonte girl, with her mom and step-dad in the audience, sang a wonderful program of songs from her extensive repertoire. She gave a divine performance that was appreciated by all.
Stephen, was born in 1963 in Vancouver, British Columbia and grew up in Dublin, Ireland where his schoolmates included future members of U2. In 1981, he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and immersed himself in the music scene while learning the fundamentals of song writing and performing.
Stephen is a guitar player of enormous talent. He blew everyone away with his exceptional guitar playing and vocals. His songs were sometimes powerful, often poignant and always entertaining - live music at its absolute best! Stephen ended the evening by inviting Kelly to join him for his final song - a fitting ending to a fabulous concert.

On Sunday, November 4, 2018 we enjoyed a special music Sunday. The Notre Dame Saxophone Quartet, a talented group of young people from Notre Dame High School in Carleton Place, treated us to several selections during service .
Alex Wolff, Maia Thompson, Sydney Doucet and Amanda Argue (a Pakenham girl) played the prelude, in the anthem spot (the choir had the day off) and during the postlude. They did a super job! We really appreciated their talent and time.
Our sincere thanks to Tony and the quartet for the wonderful music.

Covenanting Service
for Pastor Bill Checkley
Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.
A special service to enable the covenant made between the minister, the pastoral charge and the presbytery.
In the United Church of Canada the Presbytery is responsible for holding a “Covenanting Service” for new Ministers. Our new minister Bill Checkley’s service was held this Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. The service was presided over by Bronwen Harman, past chair of Presbytery.
As is customary in our Presbytery, Pastor Bill chose Rev. Rod McAvoy as his guest Minister. Rev. McAvoy has special significance in Bill’s ministry as a spiritual leader and step brother. Rod delivered a moving meditation about the meaning of a convenant. He also shared stories of Bill that helped us get to know him better.
During the service the covenant, or promises before God and one another, was made among the new minister, the pastoral charge and Presbytery.
Bill offers his sincere gratitude to all who participated with him in this very special service.

It was a big turn out for the Pakenham Santa Claus parade!
The streets of Pakenham were packed with revellers enjoying the floats and fun. Merchants pulled out all the stops with speicals and treats for parade goers.
A big thank you to all those who brought donations of food and cash to support the Lanark County Food Bank’s Hunger Stop at St. Andrew’s a drop off point.
And special thanks to our volunteers who: walked beside the Hunger Stop float during the parade to collect food and cash along the parade route; and helped load the food for transport after the parade. Thanks also to Cathy Lacroix for delivering everything to the Food Bank.

The artist, Rezka Arnuš, wanted to present two topics with her artwork pictured on the right. The country of Slovenia and the main biblical story of the worship service. At the top there are women dressed in national traditional costumes. The semicircular ornament with Slovenian folk embroidery represents a plate or a table with their best known national dish - potica - and grapes from various wine producing vineyards. Partly under the table, one can see the children from the margins of the society. They heard the invitation to the feast. The red and white colors used reflect Slovenian folk embroidery. The green background color emphasizes the green Slovenia, fields and forests. The warm colors of children express the joy of heartfelt invitation.
