2022 News Stories
To keep you and your family safe and off the roads we, with regret had to cancel our 4:30 pm Christmas Eve Family Service and our 7:30 pm Candlelight Service.
Our Sunday School teachers hosted a family Christmas movie on Saturday December 4 between 2 and 4. Kids and older folks enjoyed The Muppet Christmas Carol adapted from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens starring Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge and a cast of Muppets doing, well, what Muppets do.
The vocal trio LMJ, comprising, Lisa Webber, Mike McCormick and James Hrkash, presented a concert entitled A Christmas Celebration. We were treated to a variety of Christmas pieces both a cappella and with guitars. Admission was a free will offering. Three very talented vocalists took us on a journey of old and modern seasonal music.

Reverend Sheryl McLeod
We extended a warm welcome to our new minister.
We extended a warm welcome to our new minister.
Reverend McLeod introduced herself.
"There are many factors that give an idea of the person one is. There is one’s family of origin, one’s family of choosing, and the life experiences that help to shape and mold us. In a few short paragraphs, it is my hope to begin to give Pakenham Pastoral Charge a sense of who I am.
I am the eldest of five siblings and my father was in the military. My family is close because moving every two to three years meant we were each other’s best friends and we learned to rely on each other for support. We are also privileged in that we have been able to experience living across most of Canada. I have lived in many communities and towns from British Columbia to the Maritimes. It is a beautiful country that is defined by many different environments and cultures. Fortunately, we have all settled near Ottawa and are able to gather regularly.
I met my former husband while at university in Fredericton, New Brunswick. We have two daughters who have married and have had 5 children. So, I am “Ama” to two granddaughters and three grandsons. My eldest daughter has three children, a 6-year-old girl and last year she had maternal twins, a girl and a boy, who are 18 months old. My youngest daughter has two sons, one who is 4 and the other who is 2. We find getting together, active, noisy, and delightful.
I discovered The United Church of Canada as a child, when a notice was sent to schools letting us know of a junior choir that was beginning at the local church. There I discovered God and community and continued exploring my faith through Sunday School, Youth Groups and community organizations. I heard the call while studying nursing. While not ready to begin this particular journey of faith, I continued to explore faith and discipleship through my work as secretary/treasurer of Almonte United Church and as office manager of Stewart House. Twenty years after hearing the first call, I heard the call again and began to discern my call through community and through studies. I was ordained in 2011 after completing my studies and while in appointment at Admaston Pastoral Charge; and settled in Admaston Pastoral Charge. This relationship was over twelve years long and just recently ended. I am delighted to accept a call with Pakenham Pastoral Charge. It is my hope that I learn as much, if not more, from you as you learn from me. I look forward to our time together."
Sincerely and with blessings,
Rev. Sheryl McLeod

The Wondrousness of Coral Reefs
… and why we should keep them with us.
The Community Outreach Speaker Series started again.
The first talk was entitled:
The Wondrousness of Coral Reefs
… and why we should keep them with us.
We were honoured and fortunate to have Peter Sale as our first speaker in the re-established series. Peter is Distinguished University Professor (Emeritus) at University of Windsor. He is a marine ecologist with over 40 years of experience in tropical coastal ecosystems, particularly coral reefs. He is a senior advisor to the director of the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH).
Peter’s talk was based on a lifetime of experience on coral reefs. His talk explored how reefs are created, how the animals on the reefs live together and support each, what is happening to reefs around the world. Peter helped us understand the reefs and their role in alerting us to the global environmental crisis and its impact on ecological systems.
If you missed this fascinating, thought provoking talk you can watch it at your leisure on our YouTube channel at:

Henry Reinders
Sunday, September 18, 2022
Many years ago, Mary-Ellen Boon and a very active Sunday School started fundraising to support the Canadian Food Grains Bank (CFGB).
The CFGB works around the world to solve the problem of hunger. 15 Churches and Church-based agencies have come together to fund this work. The CFGB is also supported by the Canadian Government through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Our congregation continues to support this mission to feed the world.
On Sunday, September 18, Henry Reinders, the CFGB staff person for our area, was our guest speaker. And gave a compelling informative talk about world hunger and the efforts underway by the Canadian Food Grains Bank to eliminate it.
This service will have something for people of every age.
Welcome Rev. Sheryl McLeod
