Response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis
There has been a tremendous outpouring of goodwill and support in Canada and around the world in response to the Syrian refugee crisis. This compassion and concern is also at work in Mississippi Mills and Pakenham.
At St. Andrew’s, the Executive Council recently passed a motion to partner with one of several groups in our area that are working to bring families to the community. If you would like to contribute financially you can direct donations to the St Paul's Anglican Church and United Church of Almonte (SPAUC) group of which Cathy Reside is the chair ([email protected]). In order to receive a charitable receipt your cheque should be made payable to the Almonte United Church (they have the number for charitable receipts for this project) and write “Syrian Refugees” on the front of the cheque. You can then put it on the collection plate at St. Andrew’s, in an envelope, or mail it to Almonte United Church, 106 Elgin St. Almonte ON K0A1A0.
In Pakenham, Omar Rajab, owner of the Centennial Restaurant, encouraged his guests at his annual Christmas Eve buffet breakfast to make donations to this worthy cause. Along with clothing, food and household items, a generous $4,500 was presented to the Syrian Refugee Committee of Mississippi Mills (SRCMM). A large percentage of this money came from the former Pakenham Fiddle and Step Dance organization.
Omar has also provided a storage room in Pakenham that is now full to capacity with clothing and household items. At the moment freezers and vacuums are specific items that are needed.
On behalf of St. Andrew’s, Margie Argue and Marilyn Snedden attended the last SRCMM meeting and were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, hard work and fundraising done to date.
As families arrive there will be many opportunities to help with integration, ESL training and other needs. Let us know if you want to help.
If you would like to be part of the conversation you can join the SRCMM Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/649950821812626/
