The Search for our Permanent Minister
As the next step in seeking a new Minister for our Pastoral Charge, the Pastoral Charge Board established a Search Team. The Members are: Gayle Doxtater, Ray Giles, and Rosser Lloyd from Zion; and Julie Wilson (Secretary), Laurie Boon,
Jack Fulton, and Louise Link (Chair) from St. Andrews.
The Search Team has been working steadily since October 2021. It has received and reviewed many applications and began the interview process with one applicant. That person accepted a position with another charge before the Team could complete its assessment. Unfortunately, none of the other candidates meet our Profile needs. The Team will continue their work until the right person is found
and keep everyone informed about their progress.
If you have questions about the process, please contact Louise Link at:

Learning the Basics of Comedic Writing
If you’ve ever watched Saturday Night Live and thought “that’s not funny!” this is the perfect workshop for you!
Learn the basics of short form comedy writing (skits, sketches and short plays) with Rob and Kris Riendeau from Humm Team Productions. Rob wrote the script for Who Stole Christmas from Mississippi Mills and has since turned his attention to short form comedic writing. Kris is well known locally as the director of Who Stole Christmas…, Phantom of the Hubera, A Peak at Pakenham and Mosquito.
Together they will guide participants through the process of coming up with funny premises (premisi? premisuses?…), fleshing them out with fun characters, and polishing them into brilliant, hilarious gems that you will be proud to show off to everyone you know!
This six-week workshop will take place at St. Andrew’s United Church in Pakenham and only costs $50 per participant. That should leave everyone enough money to buy the instructors a bottle of wine at the end of the course! (Just kidding… wink…).

Palm Sunday, also called Passion Sunday, is the first day of Holy Week and always falls the Sunday before Easter. On Palm Sunday we commemorate and celebrate Jesus Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. As he rode into the city on a donkey his followers spread palm branches at his feet and called Hosanna in adoration. Palm branches were considered symbols of goodness, victory and triumph. Today in the Christian church we re-enact this joyful day, remember Christ's sacrificial death on the cross and praise God for His gift of salvation.
Jessica will be serving communion so bring bread and juice (or crackers, cookies, wine, water) so you can participate.
Please also bring something to wave in the air during the service as we re-enact the joy of Palm Sunday. It can be a cedar branch, a long-stemmed leaf from a bouquet of flowers or you can make your own palm frond
(see instructions below).

June 8, 2020
On Monday, June 8, 2020, Premier Doug Ford, outlined Stage 2 details of Ontario's plan to lift restrictions on its COVID-19 lockdown. This announcement indicated that places of worship can reopen as of Friday, June 12, 2020, if attendance does not exceed 30 per cent capacity.
At St. Andrew’s we are making plans to do this in the safest way possible. We are waiting for direction from the Region to inform our decisions about how to welcome you back safely. This information is expected in the next several days.
We will then meet to discuss all aspects of the worship service as we create a careful, staged reopening plan. We will address how to handle music, responsive readings, collection, bulletins, social time, cleaning protocols, staffing and more.
As a Pastoral Charge our summer schedule - joint services at Zion in July and at St. Andrew’s in August - is almost upon us. At St. Andrew’s we are also doing renovations and upgrades in the church. A staged approach at St. Andrew’s may see us enjoy outdoor services over the summer and open the building with a big welcome back service in September.
For the foreseeable future we will continue with our on-line Sunday Services which you can find on our YouTube Channel at: https://www.youtube.com/results….
We are looking forward to being with you again in our beautiful church.

There are two areas of consideration around reopening:
The Reopening Committee is staying in touch with the local health unit to ensure that we will be in compliance with directives to keep people safe.

- The A-V Committee, chaired by David Sale, is working on the new Audio-Visual System.
- The Reopening Committee, chaired by Rhonda Tees, is making sure the church will be safe for gathering during the COVID-19 Pandemic
What’s Been Done So Far?
Each group of volunteers has made laudable progress on their individual projects.
The Renovation Project is nearing completion. To date the Stewards, have:
- removed the old duct work from the ceiling in the Dining Hall
- installed new recessed duct work to eliminate noise and improve furnace efficiency
- installed a new ceiling to contain the updated duct work
- installed additional electrical outlets to help the Special Events Committee host events
- run wires and cables to allow the primary audio-visual system to communicate with equipment in the Dining Hall in Phase 2 of the A-V Project
- completed electrical work for LED ceiling lights in the Dining Hall
- created new cold air returns in the Dining Hall and Stewart Hall to improve air flow and heating
- removed the old water pump and pressure tank and replaced them with a new tank and submersible pump to reduce noise and ensure enough volume through the system
- arranged for the water to be tested in anticipation of the installation of a new water treatment system to eliminate the smell of sulfur.
The Reopening Committee has written a plan that has been approved by the Leeds, Grenville, Lanark District Health Unit, St. Andrew’s Executive Council and the Eastern Ontario Outaouais Regional Council. The Plan details the fundamental things that we will do to keep you, your loved ones, friends and neighbours, our staff, and volunteers safe and healthy. A copy of this plan is available to you on our website at: https://www.standrewsunitedpakenham.org/welcome-back.html The Committee has also designed appropriate signage and purchased supplies such as disposable masks, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, disinfectant to be used on the pew seat cushions and better paper towel dispensers and garbage cans.
What’s Left to Do?
Remaining on the Renovation Project list are the following jobs:
- Another coat of paint on the ceiling (we are paying someone to do this job)
- Additional coats of paint on the posts and columns (we are paying someone to do this job)
- Patch and paint the walls in the Dining Hall
- Final electrical work
- Clean up of Sunday School Rooms
- Sort, move and store everything temporarily placed in the kitchen back to their original spots
- Install the new water treatment system.
- Patch and paint the walls around the dais
- Receive training on the new system
- Install back-ordered cameras.
- Complete final testing and run-throughs to ensure system is working without any bugs
- Remove and store all Hymnals, Bibles and other books from the Sanctuary
- Have the entire church professionally cleaned (including carpets and walls).
- Post signage
- Put directional markers on the floor
- Rope off the pews for social distancing
- Close areas of the church such as Stewart Hall
- Make supplies available
There are two areas of consideration around reopening:
- the readiness of our building, and
- Public Health directives and safety protocols around COVD-19.
The Reopening Committee is staying in touch with the local health unit to ensure that we will be in compliance with directives to keep people safe.
We will likely have a staged reopening starting with services in the Sanctuary, then rentals and then catered events. We are taking things one step at a time.
You Can Help Us Open Faster

“Celebrate Soil”
The human race is dependent on soil for food. In many countries around the world soil erosion and poisoning of the soil has led to famine. And, soil erosion contributes to climate change as carbons are released into the atmosphere when soil erodes.
Whether you farm hundreds of acres or tend a small backyard garden, understanding how to manage your soil is key to healthy, sustainable crops.
Join Paul and Jean Sullivan, from Sullivan Agro as they help us think about, learn about, and celebrate soil. Whether its cover crops, tillage, technology, compaction, nutrition, soil life or rotation, we’ll discuss the soil and how to care for and sustain it well into the future.
Please note that the start time for this event only is being moved from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Fourth Sunday
At St. Andrew’s we do something special on the fourth Sunday of every month. It might be a music Sunday or a guest speaker. In 2019, Marilyn Snedden took us back to yesteryear in the Blakeney churches, Dan Mason gave us a tour of India, Tom Affleck asked us, “What is Church?”, and we welcomed Rev. Debbie Roi in a warm, wonderful homecoming on our anniversary.
We have lots more in store for you on the fourth Sunday of the every month in 2020. Come and see what we’re up to.
January 26, 2020
This month the Pakenham & District Civitan
will be talking about the organization and good works in our community.

We each bring something unique to the table and there is a place at St. Andrew's for your particular talents, skills and experience.
What is it you like to do? Whatever it is you can do it at St. Andrew’s and make a positive difference in our community.
Please check out the descriptions of committees and positions on the About Us page of this site.
We are asking that you contact the chairs of any committees that might be of interest to you to discuss how you can get involved.
Your appointment, should you choose to help, will be made at the Annual General Meeting on February 17, 2019, right after service.
